On Thursday, Kellyanne Conway Thought No Child Was worth More Than a Senate Seat. On Monday? Not So Much.

What we have here is a tale of two tweets, courtesy of CNN’s David Wright. The first comes from last Thursday, when White House counselor Kellyanne Conway was asked on Fox & Friends about the Trump administration’s stance on Roy Moore. Moore is the Alabama Republican and Senate candidate who has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment when they were minors, and was reportedly banned from a shopping mall in his home state due to his lecherous behavior around teens. He’ll face Democrat Doug Jones in a special election in December for the seat vacated by Jeff Session. With the Republicans enjoying a narrow majority, this has become an important race for both parties. Here’s what Conway had to say after being pressed by the hosts (surprisingly, we might add) for a comment:

The text:

“whatever the facts end up being, the premises, of course, the incontrovertible principle, is that there is no senate seat worth more than a child. And we all want to put that forward. I have three daughters and a son, frankly, and we all are watching this.

So, again, that was Thursday. Pretty definitive stuff, right? Here’s what she had to say Monday morning, just four days later, on the same program:

She stops short of an outright endorsement, but this exchange has just about everything else. Here are the key excerpts:

“Doug Jones in Alabama, folks, don’t be fooled. He will be a vote against tax cuts. He is weak on crime. Weak on borders. He is strong on raising your taxes. He is terrible for property owners.”

Conway: Doug Jones is a doctrinaire liberal, which is why he is not saying anything and why the media are trying to boost him.

F&F: So, vote Roy Moore?

Conway: I’m telling you that we want the votes in the Senate to get this tax bill through.

So, let’s summarize the two positions…

Kellyanne Conway on Thursday: No Senate seat is more important than a child!

Kellyanne Conway on Monday: You didn’t let me finish my sentence! I meant that no Senate seat is more important than a child…unless there’s a shitty tax reform bill at stake. Then we throw principles out the window. Obviously.

Sincere question: How do people like Conway, who conceivably once had a soul, reconcile themselves with the increasingly heinous compromises they have to make as part and parcel of working for Trump? You might expect the “Democrats are worse than pedophiles” line from Moore’s hard-line Alabama allies, but from a national figure like Conway, it’s frankly shocking.

We’ll never have an answer to that, of course—the best we can do is continue to point out the total hypocrisy, and how, when push comes to shave, they could not care less about people like Roy Moore’s victims. I hope Conway’s three daughters are proud.
