LCD Soundsystem Debuted Three New Songs at Their Brooklyn Show Last Night

Last night, LCD Soundsystem took the stage for their first show of 2017. It also doubled as the very first show at Brooklyn Steel, a new venue in New York City with a scheduled lineup that includes the likes of The Decemberists, PJ Harvey, Mitski, Father John Misty and Sylvan Esso, among others.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the show was the fact that James Murphy and co. used the occasion to debut three new songs. They’ve been promising new material since they announced their reunion, and a new album, their first since 2010’s This Is Happening, is set to be released later this year. According to Brooklyn Vegan, the new songs were titled “Tonight,” “Call Police” and “American Dream.” One attendee noted that the songs “all fit right at home in the LCD canon,” featuring “the same biting and confessional lyrics we’ve come to expect from Murphy, set to very danceable beats.”

Before the show, a letter from the band (pictured below) was distributed to fans asking that they refrain from videotaping any of the performance, revealing that Spike Jonze has directed a concert movie featuring the older material and stating that recording the new songs would “be a real gutpunch to all the people who have been working insanely hard for the last 18 months to release this music in the way we want to release it.” It was a rule Murphy seemed to enforce, reportedly telling one person early in the set, “Dude, I can see your phone. It reflects light.”

The band continues their five-night run of Brooklyn Steel shows tonight, and will be out and about this summer with a handful of festival dates, including Shaky Knees, Pitchfork and Splendour in the Grass. It remains to be seen whether the band will feature a different batch of new tunes at any of these subsequent shows, but we sure hope they do. More LCD Soundsystem is never something to complain about.
