Watch Death Cab for Cutie Perform “Gold Rush” on Ellen

Twenty years into their careers, Grammy-nominated indie-rock band Death Cab for Cutie made their debut on The Ellen Degeneres Show on Thursday.

The band performed the lead single, “Gold Rush,” from their ninth studio album Thank You For Today. The album, out last month and reviewed by Paste here, showed that the band could take their signature melancholic sound and keep it fresh, maturing to survive in a post-MySpace reality.

“Gold Rush,” built on a Yoko Ono sample from the ‘70s, is upbeat in its desire to preserve a changing landscape and kept the crowd at Ellen in a solid sway. Also apparently enjoying the performance was the show’s host, who declared that she “love[s] them so much” before sending the audience home with copies of Thank You For Today.

The performance precedes the band’s North American tour, set to begin this weekend. You can check out the band on Ellen below and revisit Paste’s chat with frontman Ben Gibbard from earlier this year here. You can find a 2008 Death Cab session from the Paste archives and the band’s tour dates further down below.
